The Golf Clubs Darren Clarke Used to Win the British Open

If I had to pick one word to sum up the British Open, it would be this: Patience. Golf, simply put, takes patience to play. Now, add in extreme and volatile weather conditions, a confounding and imagination stretching golf course, and the weight of a major championship to the mix. Patience, my friends, looms essential. All this, and we haven’t even touched on the fact that this was Darren Clarke’s 20th trip to the rodeo, that the 42 year old knew in his heart this was going to be one of his last chances. Clarke had been patient, waiting for a chance like this for a long time, weathering the ups and downs of life and professional golf. Through it all, his patience persisted, and he stayed that way down to the final, championship winning putt.

It also helped that he looked at home out there. Like a golfer who had been there before. And he had. He put his rain gear on when needed, and put it back in the bag soon after. He choked down on his long irons, took something off. He flew the ball in low with no spin, higher with some. He gave important putts a chance to go in, and didn’t sweat the four foot come-backers. The guy just played solid, incredible golf. Some would even say patient golf. Here are the golf clubs he used to become a champion:

Driver: TaylorMade R11 (9°) with Project X 8A3 shaft
Fairway Wood: TaylorMade R9 (13°) with Project X 8A3 shaft
Hybrid: TaylorMade Rescue TP (19°) with Project X XHA4 shaft
Irons: TaylorMade Tour Preferred Forged MB (4-PW) with Project X 6.0 shafts
Wedges: TaylorMade TP xFT (50°, 54°, 60°) with Project X 6.0 shafts
Putter: Scotty Cameron Black Tour Rat
Golf Ball: TaylorMade Penta TP
