There’s something about Glen Abbey Golf Club for Jhonattan Vegas. The native of Venezuela won at Glen Abbey in 2016 to add the RBC Canadian Open to his resume. On Sunday Vegas did it again by prevailing in a one-hole sudden-death playoff with Charley Hoffman.
The two players tied at 21-under 267 at the end of regulation play. Then Vegas birdied the 18th hole in the playoff to repeat as champion.
The three-time PGA Tour winner had little reason to believe this would be his week after missing five consecutive cuts and seven of his last nine.
“I’ve had a horrible summer to put it the best way,” Vegas told the media. “But it’s golf, and you have to keep a positive mentality and always think that you’re going to play your best.”
A change in the golf bag helped.
Vegas replaced prototype Mizuno MP-18 irons (in use since the Shell Houston Open) with his Mizuno MP-4 muscleback irons. The old favorites got the job done. Vegas hit 75 percent of the greens in regulation at the RBC Canadian Open.
