The PGA Tour is at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, this week for the RBC Canadian Open. Seventeen years ago Glen Abbey was also the site of one of the greatest shots in the legendary career of Tiger Woods.
Battling Grant Waite to the finish, Tiger drove into a fairway bunker on the 18th hole, a 508-yard par 5. With a yardage of 213 over water, he pulled a 6-iron and let it rip. The towering shot came to rest on the collar at the back of the green.
“I kept telling everybody I didn’t hit the green,” Tiger said. “I hit it over the green, so it wasn’t really that good.”
Yeah, right.
Tiger went on to make birdie and win by a stroke. It was his ninth victory of the 2000 season. Joining Lee Trevino, he also became only the second player to win the U.S., British and Canadian Opens in the same year.
