VIDEO GOLF INSTRUCTION: Dave Pelz on How to Find the Right Putter

The putter is a scoring club. If you want to instantly improve your game and shoot lower scores, eliminate three-putts and sink more putts. I know this. You know this.

But how do you and I know if we’re using the right putter? Or is there such a thing as a “right” putter? Perhaps almost any putter from a top-name company will do.

Short-game guru Dave Pelz has a few smart tips that can help you select your next putter. He begins with this morsel: “There is one best putter for you.”

Pelz offers three important tips for how to find that perfect putter:

  1. Physical fit. Shaft length, lie, grip size.

  2. Aim and alignment. “If you can’t aim this thing, nothing else matters,” Pelz says.

  3. Swing balance of putter vs. your impact pattern.

Find at least a few putters that satisfy the above criteria and try them on the practice putting green. With which one do you make the most putts?

“This may not make you the world’s best putter instantaneously,” Pelz says, “but it will be a start in that direction.”

Dave Pelz has coached several major champions, including Phil Mickelson, Tom Kite, Payne Stewart and Lee Janzen. His book, Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible, was a national bestseller.
