Valspar Championship
Admittedly, with the NCAA basketball tournament dominating the nation’s attention last weekend, I did not watch as much golf as I normally do. However, I still managed to keep an eye on the Valspar Tournament, the final PGA Tour event of the early season Florida swing.
Paul Casey must have been a snake charmer in a former life because he’s now tamed the Snake Pit on the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Golf Resort two years in a row. Over the four days, Casey was able to navigate the Snake Pit in 1-over par, which proved to be the difference in his one stroke victory over Louis Oosthuizen and Jason Kokrak.
At 41 years of age, the Arizona State University product has played on the European Tour since 2001 and the PGA Tour since 2005. While he’s experienced quite a bit of success on the European Tour (13 wins), he has not converted his opportunities on the PGA Tour (3 wins) with the same frequency.
His first PGA Tour victory came in 2009 at the Shell Houston Open. He didn’t win again until 2018 where he won the first of back-to-back Valspar Championship’s.
Though, while Casey may not have found the winner’s circle very often, he is often in contention. Throughout his PGA Tour career, Casey has amassed over $28 million in tournament winnings, including 56 top 10 finishes and 119 top 25 finishes in 187 made cuts.
Paul plays a mixed bag of clubs. These are the clubs he used to win his second consecutive Valspar Championship. (As reported by PGATOUR):
