Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond Driver

Extreme Distance.

Dual Distance Chambers

If you’re looking for a neutral or draw ball flight to work the ball with more control, pick the left or right chamber. Then set the Gravity Core up or down depending on where you hit the ball for maximum ball speed. It’s a distance turbo charger to increase your ball speed and the ultimate combination of extreme distance and shot-shaping control for the best players.

Next Gen R•MOTO Technology

To get every last yard out of your driver, you need more speed. R•MOTO Technology provides structure for a thinner face, leading to high ball speeds on center hits and off-center hits too.

OptiFit Hosel

The OptiFit hosel lets you choose from 8 different configurations to tune loft, lie and face angle. With the OptifFit hosel appropriately configured to the needs of each individual player, the result is a high launch angle and low spin-rate, the launch conditions that promote maximum distance.

A Deeper Face, Traditional Shape and a Low Center of Gravity

The best players want a deeper face, a traditional shape and a low center of gravity to reduce spin with just the right amount of forgiveness and workability. And that’s exactly what the Alpha 816 DBD has. The shape of the crown, the open face angle, and the matte black finish with no distractions all suit better players’ eyes when they’re standing over the ball.

happy customer.
I've never hit a ball so far...very pleased...
Lovin' this club
Age 67; 10 hdcp. Shaft: Aldila I/O stiff. Swing speed 80 (poor) but smooth. I've tried other shafts; seems to make no difference for me. 9 degree head. Shaft@ 45.5 but I'm choking where 44" best for me. May shorten. Needed add'l length off tee and wanted more penetrating flight. Just got it a few weeks ago. Love the adjustability, which did not take long (although I might try other settings in future). Good accuracy with ability to work the club as desired draw/fade or high/low. Able to adjust to gain a more penetrating flight with better rollout. When hit sweet, gains me regular about 10-15 yds beyond others when hit sweet, sometimes more. Let a friend try it a few times (bigger hitter than me), and he said he hit longest drive of his life with it---able to reach par 5 in 2. For me, excellent improvement in rollout vs all other drivers. Found new at $120 total and sure beats paying for them more expensive drivers. AND, you don't have to be great to use this driver. Just have an understanding of a good swing. The club can't solve extreme left and right bananas; only you can do that.

Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond Driver
It’s truly an amazing driver. The ball comes off the club face HOT. The effect is quite stunning. I think that is what we call improvement in technology.
Great Driver!
Great Driver!
Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond Driver
Very nice hitting drive. I have increased my distance from my previous Callaway driver that was a few years old model.
Took a few rounds to adjust to this and feel like the club was "hot" but starting to really like this driver.
Excellent Driver
Built for a better player. Great look, feels even better. Sweet spot feels a bit smaller, but when hit right, it launches.
First time as a customer, but won't be the last
Recently purchased the Callaway Alpha II driver. This particular club didn't quite fit me, but the folks at paid for the return shipping and didn't charge too much of a restocking fee for returning it. That's a vendor I will continue to do business with.

The Takeaway

New for 2016, the Great Big Bertha Alpha 816 features extreme distance from the Dual Distance Chambers with the Gravity Core weight. By placing the core in the up or down, left or right chamber, you can change the ball flight, control the bias, increase your ball speed, and help with shot-shaping control. The Alpha 816 also features the new Next Gen R•Moto Technology, which provides a thinner face and produces higher ball speeds on all center and off-center hits. The deeper faced, classic shaped head has a low center of gravity that produces the right amount of forgiveness and workability.

Who's It For?

The Alpha 816 is more suited to the better player, who produces a medium-high to higher swing speed. This is a low CG head that produces a lower spin rate to combat the higher spin rates that accompany higher swing speeds or any player that just produces too much spin based on their swing speed. There are plenty of adjustments on this driver for the really technical players who like to dial in their launch monitor number to achieve max distance and shot shape.

Final Take

In my book, the Alpha 816 Driver has a simple, classic look and a perfect size to it. It has neither a too big nor too small of a footprint. The flat black crown has a raised Chevron alignment aid, while the face sits slightly open. It seems to have more loft than the stated degree at address, which helps the player’s confidence when they are over the ball. The face is deep and feels evenly distributed from heel to toe. I found it to have a very solid feel and produced a very muted sound. The ball flight was a touch on the low side, but this is mainly because my swing speed is just not quite enough to create the proper lift from this low-spinning 9 degree head. When you add in excellent adjustability, a huge variety of no upcharge shafts and UDesign for true customizability you have a winner for 2016.
