Explosive Speed and Distance
Steel has long been the dominant material used for making irons, and Callaway possesses unique steel-working talents that have created a history of sophisticated designs pairing performance-enhancing technologies with clean, strong shapes.
Steelhead XR Irons combine the shaping and playability that made the Steelhead X-14 one of the most popular irons of all-time. Their explosive power come from industry-leading, next-generation 360 Face Cup™ technology that increases ball speed with greater efficiency on both center hits and mis-hits for more distance on every swing.
Higher Launch and Better Feel
A bar of steel-infused soft urethane positioned behind the lower portion of the face serves two functions; Absorbs unwanted vibration for great feel, and adds weight, which lowers the head’s Center of Gravity for faster ball speed on low hits and higher launch characteristics.
More Forgiveness
Hollow Bore-Thru hosel design saves significant weight that’s repositioned in strategic places in the head to create more forgiveness and easier launch.
Control and Distance
The CG is positioned strategically in each iron to promote easy launch and long carry in the long-irons, easy launch and keen control in the middle-irons, and lower and high-spinning shots in the short-irons.

The Takeaway
Signature shape meets next generation technology. The 360 Face Cup increases ball speeds generating greater efficiency on both pure and off-center hits. The results are simply more distance on every swing. A steel-infused polyurethane layer positioned behind the lower side of the face has two functions, higher launch and superior feel. The layer absorbs unwanted vibrations giving players excellent feedback and it strategically adds weight to lower the club head’s CG for higher launch characteristics and faster ball speeds on low hits.
Callaway’s Hollow Bore-Thru design repurposes saved weight to create more forgiveness and make it easier to launch. The Steelhead XR Irons has progressive CG placements that promote easy launch and long carry in the long irons, easy launch and keen control in the mid-irons and spin controlled precision in the short irons.
Who's It For?
These newer Steelhead XR irons will fit a large range of players that are looking for a very forgiving iron head with that classic Steelhead look from the past. 10 to 36 handicaps.
Final Take
These have that classic Callaway look at address. A high toe, longer blade, noticably tapered down from the top of the toe to the hosel screams throwback Steelheads. A combination of different finishes give it a nice blended look that does not come off as too busy. The bottom two grooves have white paint that helps square the club up, something I always prefer on my irons. With the combination of the head design and stock shaft I found launching the ball with these irons quite easy and with very good distance. There is Plenty of forgiveness on mishits, my misses with irons tend to be out on the toe area. Callaway offers many different shaft choices to fit your needs, steel and graphite at no change.
