Description

JPX-850 Fairway Woods

Shock Wave Sole.

The primary function of the JPX-850’s Shock Wave sole is to enable the entire club head to contract and expand on impact – delivering more of the energy from the swing to the ball for increased distance.

The additional mass also lowers the head’s center of gravity, enabling easy launch from strikes direct from the turf.

There is a 4 degree range of loft adjustment possible within each fairway head (3/5/7) through the use of Mizuno’s Quick Switch shaft adjustability.

The Takeaway

After my eye opening experience with the JPX 850 driver I was excited to test the fairway version. Again I found the colorway just stunning and a bit mesmerizing because it’s just so different than the rest. A quick look at this head and you will notice a very shallow face, which will produce a low CG that help some and hinder others. The head was more on the compact side, and other than being slightly flat had a nice shape to it. Just like the Driver it was paired with a Fujikura Speeder 6.3 shaft and an adjustable sleeve which I tested at 15 degrees. The feel was not as solid to me as the Driver and my launch was quite high as I figured with the narrow face and low CG.

Off The Tee

I had issues with it off the tee because of how shallow the face is. I would have to tee the ball down very low to avoid hitting the ball high on the face, which was easy to do when teed my normal height. Ball flight was too high and the head just did not reduce the spin enough for me to see that penetrating ball flight needed off the tee.

Off The Deck

The JPX 850 as expected was very easy to launch and produced a higher than normal ball flight that I see with most 15 degree heads. I tried a few different lies in the fairway and it always produced a quick elevating ball flight.

Out Of The Rough

With its low CG and shallow face, the JPX 850 makes an excellent head to elevate the ball out of the rough.

Who's It For?

Those that have issues elevating the ball of the deck and in the rough will benefit from this head.

Final Take

After all my excitement over the Driver, the fairway version just did not cut it for my type of game, even though it should make for a nice fairway metal for those that need help in getting the ball up quickly. Though still stunning to look at and very forgiving, I was disappointed that I never saw a ball flight that suited my eye like I did with the driver.
