TaylorMade P790 Irons

Forged Distance

The new TaylorMade P790 Irons feature the best of both worlds; clean design and revolutionary distance generating technology. These player's irons combine forged construction with new SpeedFoam Technology to deliver breakthrough distance and forgiveness with enhanced feel and workability.

A hollow cavity in the P790 irons is filled with revolutionary SpeedFoam to generate breakthrough distance in a forged iron. This allows for optimal weight placement resulting in a fast, forgiving and playable iron.

Speed Pocket

TaylorMade’s proven Speed Pocket is designed to flex and rebound at impact resulting in faster ball speeds, higher launch angles and a stronger ball flight – even on mishits.

4140 Forged Carbon Steel

The P790’s are made from high-strength carbon steel and feature an ultra-thin wrapped face with a mini Inverted Cone to promote faster ball speeds with added forgiveness.

Expensive but great feel, stock
Expensive but great feel, stock length is a hair too long for me (5'8")
Products easy to find, research and purchase on
Incredible performance in a beautiful package.
I recently just got custom fitted for a set of these clubs. While getting fitted I hit them against Callaway Rogue Pro, and Titleist AP3 irons. These irons not only looked the best of the three but performed better as well. I was over 10-12 yards longer with these clubs than my previous older TaylorMade clubs. I was about 5 yards longer with the p790's then the Rogue Pro or AP 3. They were also closer to the Target line, had a tighter dispersion, flew 4-6 yards higher and came down 3-5 degrees steeper. My ball speed was 8 miles per hour faster than my old clubs and still 4 miles per hour faster than the other two sets. The sound and feel are amazing. They are very forgiving on off-center hits and still maintain great ball speed. They have the feel and playability of a player's iron but the Forgiveness of a game improvement Club. They look much more like a player's iron at address, with a smaller head size, then Top Line, and less offset. They are by far the best clubs I have ever had. I highly recommend them.
P790 Played 6 Rounds since March 2018
Ordered the 3-A P790, with 5.5 rifle shafts and Half Cord Red/Black Golf Pride grips. Each round seems to get better and better. My higher clubs, 6-9, increased in yardage from 5-15 yards. My PW and Approach (A) clubs seemed to not change in yardage too much, which I'm definitely good with. My 3 and 4 are still in work but my missed shots are getting less and less as I get used to the clubs. My 5 iron is a great safety club it didn't change at all. I still hit it 180-190. Overall these clubs have improved my accuracy and distance, and since I'm 56 yo with a 13hdcp I'm very happy with the outcome. I'll update my post on my 3 and 4 when I get more time under them, because at the range they play perfectly and we all know we're scratch golfers there. D

Best clubs I’ve ever had. Great products. Fast shipping!!
Best Iron I have ever swung
I have enjoyed the sport of Golf since an 8 year old, now into my forties I have had the pleasure of hitting many a club. Also, I spent a few years working in a pro shop that fronted a driving range, allowing us to hit every iron that came through the store. Until recently the Taylor Made CGB were the cleanest irons ever; now that title belongs to the P-790. The distance is pure and AT LEAST one club length farther than standard irons (Ping, Callaway, Titleist, etc). The feel is unmatched, allowing the bearer to shorten the backswing and "let the club do the work". At this price - sub $1,000 - I can see no reason for shopping further: These are the best irons on the market.

The Takeaway

The irons that sparked an ongoing legal controversy, the TaylorMade P790 are a combination of forged construction and SpeedFoam Technology. Made from 4140 Forged Carbon steel, this is a distance iron in a players iron package. The hollow cavity, filled with TaylorMade’s SpeedFoam, allows for optimally placed weight that generates exceptional distance and forgiveness from a forged iron. The Speed Pocket (3-7 irons) and mini inverted cone are designed to flex and rebound at impact giving players faster ball speeds and higher launch angles, even on mishits.

Who's It For?

These irons are marketed as a distance iron for the better player, but I think these irons can be used by improving mid handicap players, as well.

Final Take

Every year the line between players irons and game improvement irons blurs even more, and the TaylorMade P790 irons do nothing to bring any clearer delineation to that line. With that said, there is a ton to like about these distance irons for better players. At address, the 79mm blade has a confidence inspiring look to it. These irons definitely have a larger footprint to them than traditional players irons, but I also didn’t feel like I was looking down at a super game improvement iron either. The satin chrome is a nice look for this stuffed blade.

Breaking down the actual shots, I had no complaints at all. One thing to note is the lofts of the P790 irons are a bit stronger than traditional players irons, and that can equate for some of the added distance. The feel was solid, the trajectory right in the slot I’m accustomed to seeing, they produced a slight draw and had good forgiveness on mishits off the toe. Due to the solid weighting, players should have no problem launching these irons. If you are looking for a step up in your game, but still need some forgiveness and distance from your irons, jump in line for the P790 irons.
