Titleist 714 MB Irons
714 MB Irons
Minimum Offset, Maximum Workability
Titleist has released their newly updated version of the company's muscle-back irons for better players, the new 714 MB, that made their irons debut on the PGA Tour in June at the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club.
The 714 MB irons are forged from 1025 carbon steel to enhance feel and maximize feedback at impact. With very little offset and slightly thinner toplines, the most significant upgrade made to the 714 MB over its predecessor can be found in the sole of the iron. The leading edge is straighter and with the addition of slightly more camber, Titleist says that the new 714 MB irons will work through the ground more effectively, even on steeper swings.
Titleist also designed the transitional portion of the heel area where the leading edge blends into the hosel to be smoother and straighter so the hosel appears to flow more directly into the head. And, Titleist slightly updated the cosmetics of the 714 MB with a Tour preferred satin finish that reduces glare to accentuate the toe and top-line profiles for easy alignment.
The 714 MB is the most game-enhancing iron that Titleist makes, but it's far from the most forgiving. It's for golfers who demand an iron that will let them carve around greenside bunkers, under strong winds and over distant trees. If you are a seasoned, better player who demands feel and precision then you’ll like these irons. But Titleist acknowledges that they are not for everyone. When it comes to the new 714 MB muscle back irons, they add “performance is not an issue, but your skill level might be."

The Takeaway
Of the heads I tested, the Titleist 714 MB Forged Iron is one of the few classic muscle backs. The simple clean lines of these carbon steel heads are both traditional and breathtaking. A progressive sole width, minimal offset, straight leading edge, and compact short irons are what muscle backs are about.
Who's It For?
Players irons are for touring and club pros, skilled amateurs and traditionalists. While they offer the greatest feel and maneuverability, with a smaller sweet spot than game improvement irons they are also the toughest to hit consistently.
Final Take
Having a small compact head like the MB style in my hands was both scary and exciting at the same time. My worry was that I would not produce the results needed to provide proper feedback, but I was excited to give it my best try! I felt these heads had that timeless look and less offset at address than some of the other players irons that I tested. In my hands, the head felt on the lighter side, but not too light, and the feel was buttery smooth. I was totally surprised by the results that I saw, this head flat out performed for me! My ball flight was higher than I expected for such a thin soled head, though the dispersion was super tight. Much like all the other clubs that Titleist offers there are endless choices for customization.
