Best Drivers for Mid-to-High Handicap Golfers

Each of these drivers offers multiple heads which span the entire spectrum forgiveness and adjustability, so we recommend trying out multiple options to see which clubhead is right for your swing.

Ping G440

Ping is known as one of the most forgiving brands on the market. If you’re looking for a driver that has the most versatility for the widest range of handicaps the Ping G440 is the best place to start. The G440 comes in four different heads: the core MAX head, the low-spin LST, the draw-biased SFT; and the super-stable, high-MOI K head. All four present golfers with great options, but the MAX head is the most versatile of the four. It’s very forgiving and has a weight at the back of the head that can be placed into a neutral position as well as slight draw and fade biases. A great option for the widest variety of golfers. The Ping adapter sleeve also enables you to move the loft up or down a maximum of 1.5 degrees to modify your launch angle or spin rate. The LST offers the same adjustability with a slightly further forward center of gravity to reduce the spin. The SFT’s adjustable weight can only be in the draw or draw-plus positions. The K head’s weight is not movable so as to maintain the stability of the whole clubhead.

Cobra is an excellent choice if you want a top quality brand without paying top dollar prices. The OPTM also comes in four different heads: the core X, LS, MAX-D (for Draw) and MAX-K (high MOI). Cobra’s adapter sleeve offers 33 different loft and lie settings, so it’s good to consult with a fitter and/or Cobra’s matrix of settings to make sure you know which setting to use. The OPTM X is extremely versatile and offers movable weights to make slight changes to the CG. The amount of adjustability makes it one of the most all-encompassing drivers on the market this year.

Titleist GTS

Titleist is the pinnacle of golf, having long since been the leaders in golf ball design, they take zero shortcuts or compromises when it comes to drivers. If you’re looking for premium performance, Titleist should be your go to driver. The new Titleist GTS drivers (GTS2, GTS3, and GTS4) are all designed to be more forgiving and more adjustable than previous Titleist offerings. The GTS2 is the most forgiving of the bunch, but that doesn’t mean a mid-to-high handicap golfer should not try the other ones. The GTS2 has two weights that you can switch the positions of, to alter the CG to help with any launch and spin adjustments. The GTS3 and GTS4 each have a weight for draw and fade bias, but that’s recommended only if you have the requisite clubhead speed that a lower-CG driver offers.
